An idea doesn’t have to become an essay right away. Write one sentence first. Give it somewhere to land. When you return a few months later, you may find that it has quietly grown into something else.
THE NOTEBOOK
Writing
From passing thoughts to questions worth staying with.
Thoughts
Worth keeping, even before they take shape.I went for a walk today without listening to anything. On the same familiar street, I noticed for the first time that the tree on the corner had changed color. Sometimes an empty moment isn’t a lack of input. It is finally having room to see.
Instead of asking, “How much did I learn today?” I would rather ask, “Did anything change my mind, even a little?”
I’ll leave the question here and come back to it later. It also brings me back to giving a question some time.
When you reread a book, what feels new may not be the sentences. It may be the person you have become.
A small thing done regularly leaves more of a trace than a big thing done once in a while. Two lines a day count, too.
